Artist Statement-Beyond Photography

As a photographer I find the concise exquisite moment of taking the picture particularly important. By firing the shutter at the right instant a photograph becomes compelling and formally satisfying. This decisive moment is seen in an instant but may resonate forever through the making of a photograph. The singular precise image is part of my usual approach to art-making and these essences of truth are reflected in my traditional photographs.

This work is a departure from my unwavering passion for the split second.  Instead approaching the residue of many photographs, the abstraction of the clinical lens, embracing the pleasure of color, surface, and the mark. These pieces are an exploration of how I can manipulate the clarity of a single moment and extend it into an abstract world of color.  I identify with painting, specifically abstract expressionism & color field. I have truly enjoyed returning to the visceral non-representational nature of making less definitive imagery.  The images included here, although made with a camera, have more in common with drawing and painting. I leave it to the viewer to decide whether they are beyond photography.
